Teaching my kids abouts cars

I think it's really important to know a bit about the internals of a car, so that when you are getting your car serviced you can talk intelligently with the auto technician. As well, there are many easy DIY jobs you can do on your car to save your some money which can make all the difference when you are young and starting out. This site is where I am recording everything I am teaching my kids about auto servicing, and because I think it will be useful to many other families as well. I hope you find it useful for your family.

Indications Your Differential Is Acting Up and Needs Repair Service

Kenzi Jacobs

Most modern vehicles have a differential. A differential is the mechanical component on your vehicle's drivetrain that divides the engine's torque two ways, so that the wheels can turn at different speeds when required. Repairing your differentials immediately you notice that they are experiencing problems will help you retain control of your vehicle when conditions get tough on the road. It will also ensure you avoid the need for early replacements, which cost much more than the repairs.

Regrettably, many vehicle owners can't tell when their differentials are in trouble. By the time they realise that something is wrong with their differentials, the problem would have escalated beyond repair. To avoid facing this predicament, you should be able to pick up any signs indicating that your differentials need repair.

Be sure to immediately have repair work performed on your differentials whenever you detect the following trouble signs.

Differential sounds

When it is working correctly, your differential should not make any sounds. Therefore, if you begin hearing sounds coming from your differential, then it is a surefire sign that something is wrong. A failing differential can produce different sounds. If you hear a howling sound when you are accelerating the vehicle, whirring sound when slowing down, or banging sound when negotiating a sharp corner, chances are really high that you urgently need differential repairs. So be sure to pay attention to any noise your differential makes.

Drag on the vehicle

Irrespective of how slowly your vehicle moves, it will always encounter some sort of air resistance, which creates an aerodynamic force referred to as drag. If your differential is not working properly, you will experience drag when you are coasting down the road at low speeds. Drag can get so terrible that it may feel as though you are riding on low tyres.

Vibrations while driving

If you feel vibrations when you are driving, there are so many potential reasons for the problem. A bad differential could be one of them. This presents a dangerous driving situation, therefore make sure to have your vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible. Vehicles experience so many different types of vibrations, therefore you should carefully observe the vibrations occurring in your vehicle so you can give your mechanic a detailed and accurate description of how the vibrations feel and/or sound. This will lead to proper diagnosis of the problem and its subsequent repair.
