How to Rustproof Your Campervan

The exposure of the underside of your campervan to moisture and mud can eventually cause it to corrode. Such corrosion can cause very costly damage to components underneath the campervan. You can prevent that damage from taking place by rustproofing your campervan. This article discusses the key steps that you need to follow in order to rustproof the campervan effectively.
Step 1: Inspection
The first thing that you need to do is to inspect the undercarriage of your campervan. This task can be done very well if the campervan is raised on a hydraulic platform so that you can stand underneath it comfortably. Check for any damage, such as dents or broken exhaust components. Have any damage repaired before you proceed with the next steps of the rustproofing process.
Step 2: Protection of Sensitive Components
Once you are satisfied that any damage to the undercarriage has been repaired, proceed to protect any exposed vulnerable parts of your campervan. These may include wheel arches, electrical components and duct holes in the undercarriage. You can use masking tape to protect those sensitive areas of the campervan.
Step 3: Clean the Undercarriage
This is one of the most important steps of the rustproofing process. It is aimed at removing any caked mud so that moisture cannot be trapped within that trapped mud. Use an air hose to remove any dirt and flaking paint from the undercarriage. You may also use a high-pressure water hose to remove the accumulated mud and dirt from all undercarriage components. However, you should use a low-pressure setting so that you do not dislodge the protective masking tape on the delicate parts that you covered earlier. It may also be advisable for you to first wet the dried mud and wait for a while so that it softens.
Step 4: Application of the Rust Treatment
Rustproofing products can be oils, waxes or coatings. Follow the specific application procedure recommended for the particular product that you are using. For example, some manufacturers may recommend the use of a clear wax product for wheel arches. Let the rust treatment set for the recommended duration before you remove the masking tape and other protective measures that you had used in step 2 above.
The process of rustproofing a campervan is very tiresome and time-consuming. You should therefore undertake it when you are sure that you are capable of performing the job to its successful completion. Otherwise, hire a professional to perform the task on your behalf.
